Official Description: “...we are encouraging everyone to use social media to make a difference in the world by promoting charitable giving. We are celebrating Social Media Giving Day by using social media to promote generosity and kindness through all of our platforms.” This article goes into more detail if you’re interested.

My Definition: SMGD is a way for nonprofits to highlight a giving opportunity through

specific tools available on social media.

It is similar to Giving Tuesday in November, but

focused specifically on using social media as a tool for good.

Here are a few ways you can utilize SMGD as part of your nonprofit marketing strategy.

Caption Draft

On Social Media Giving Day, we ask our supporters to join us in utilizing social media as

a tool for good! As a local nonprofit, days like these help [name of nonprofit or “us”]

connect with our followers and request financial contributions to support [our mission]. Click the link below to donate through our special campaign today as we raise funds

for [specific project].

If you’re unable to give financially today, there are lots of other ways you can give back

and help us grow using social media: like, follow, tag a friend in the comments, share

this post to your Story, send us a DM to inquire about volunteer opportunities, etc. -

every little bit helps!

Options for Campaigns

Facebook: You can post like normal with the donation link in the caption and/or share

it as an “Raise Money” post. When drafting your post, click the three dots in the bottom

right corner of the draft to expand the post options and then select “Raise Money.” This

would then allow your post to automatically include a special header indicating

[NAME is raising money] and a link at the bottom of the post to the PayPal Giving Fund.

Instagram: Reminder to now post active links in IG captions since IG does not show

them. Instead, mention something along the lines of “link in bio and Story” and then

you can add the link to your IG Story. (+ add a # feature)

LinkedIn: You can post like normal with the donation link in the caption and/or share it as an “Event” like this example.

Photo Options

The photo/graphic you use could be a generic mention of social media generally, a phone with a screenshot of your “Donate” page edited on top, or a photo of someone online shopping (i.e. holding some type of device + credit card). Here are some options to give you an idea. (Hint: Find one that matches your branding colors!)
